Markham's older neighbourhoods reflect over two centuries of settlement. Unionville, founded in 1794 by German-born American settlers, still centres on a Main Street heritage district lined with 19th-century buildings. Markham Village's residential streets were largely built up between 1940 and 1970, though a number of 19th-century homes remain within its designated heritage conservation district. Berczy Village is newer again, built mostly from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s with heritage-inspired brick homes, bungalows, and townhouses.
