How Long Does Popcorn Ceiling Removal Take? (Toronto Timelines)

Quick answer: A standard-size room with a standard-height ceiling and unpainted popcorn texture is usually finished in one day. A painted ceiling, a large room or a high ceiling can stretch that to two days. A one-bedroom condo usually takes 2–3 days, a two-bedroom condo 3–5 days, and a house usually 3–5 days. If the texture needs an asbestos test first, add about 3 business days for the lab result.

Typical timelines at a glance

These are the timelines we see most often on our own projects in Toronto and the GTA. They cover the whole job, not just scraping: removal, skim coat, primer and paint.

  • One room (standard size, standard ceiling height, unpainted texture): 1 day

  • One room with a painted ceiling, a larger floor area or a high ceiling: up to 2 days

  • One-bedroom condo (about 450–600 sq ft): 2–3 days

  • Two-bedroom condo (650 sq ft and up): 3–5 days

  • House: usually 3–5 days; larger homes, painted or high ceilings, or work done in stages can take up to about a week

Every home is a little different, so we confirm the timeline for your project during the free on-site estimate.

Why it takes more than an afternoon

Taking the texture off is only one part of the job. A finished ceiling goes through several stages:

  1. Seal the work area. Floors and furniture are covered, and the room is sealed with plastic sheeting before any texture comes off.

  2. Remove the texture with dust extraction. We use Festool sanders connected to HEPA-filtered vacuums, working section by section.

  3. Repair and skim-coat to Level 5. Cracks, seams and old patches are repaired, then a full skim coat goes over the ceiling and is sanded flat. Each coat needs time to dry before it can be sanded, and this is the main reason larger jobs take several days. See Level 4 vs Level 5 ceiling finish.

  4. Prime and paint. A stain-blocking primer, then two coats of flat ceiling paint.

  5. Clean up. The plastic and floor protection come down once the finishing is complete.

What makes the job take longer

  • A painted ceiling. Paint over popcorn texture makes it harder to remove, so a room that would take one day can take two. More on this in can you remove a painted popcorn ceiling.

  • A large room or a high ceiling. More area to remove, repair and finish, and more time on ladders.

  • A lot of furniture. Everything that stays in the room has to be covered and protected before work starts, and that adds time.

  • Working in stages. If you're living in the home and we can't work in all the rooms at once, the job is done room by room or floor by floor. That's often the most practical option for families, but it makes the overall project longer than doing everything at once.

If your home needs asbestos testing

If the popcorn texture went up before 1990, it should be tested before anything is disturbed. We take a sample and deliver it to a lab, and the result usually takes about 3 business days. Nothing is removed until the result is back.

Testing costs $200 before HST, lab analysis included. Each additional sample, for example from another area of the home, is $75. Our asbestos testing guide explains how testing works in Ontario and what happens if the result is positive.

When can you move furniture back and use the room?

Ideally, wait 24 hours after the last coat of paint so the ceiling is fully dry, then move furniture and decor back in.

If you need the room sooner, you can usually start moving things back after 5–6 hours, once the ceiling has dried.

Most homeowners stay home during the work: the work area is sealed and the dust is captured at the sander, so the rest of the house stays usable. See dust-free popcorn ceiling removal in Toronto for how that works.

How to keep your project on schedule

  • Book the asbestos test early if your home was built before 1990, so the lab result is back before the start date.

  • Sort out building approvals if you live in a condo. Most buildings need management approval, proof of insurance and a booked service elevator. See what's different about condo projects.

  • Clear small and fragile items from the rooms before we arrive. Our guide on how to prepare your home for popcorn ceiling removal has the full checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to remove a popcorn ceiling in one room?

One day for a standard-size room with a standard-height ceiling and unpainted texture, including the skim coat, primer and paint. A painted ceiling, a large room or a high ceiling can take up to two days.

How long does popcorn ceiling removal take in a condo?

A one-bedroom condo (about 450–600 sq ft) usually takes 2–3 days. A two-bedroom unit of 650 sq ft and up usually takes 3–5 days.

How long does it take for a whole house?

Usually 3–5 days. Larger homes can take up to about a week, and so can jobs where the ceilings are painted or high, or where the work is done in stages because the family is living in the home.

How soon can I use the room again?

It's best to wait 24 hours after painting so the ceiling is fully dry before moving furniture back. If you need the room sooner, you can usually move things back after 5–6 hours, once the ceiling has dried.
