Short answer: the best time to install pot lights is while your popcorn ceiling is being removed. The ceiling is already being refinished, the crew is already on site, and the electrical work happens before the final coat of paint — not after. Booking it separately means paying for a second visit and cutting into a ceiling you just paid to finish.
Why pot lights and ceiling removal belong in the same project
Most homeowners think of these as two separate jobs. They aren't — or at least, they shouldn't be.
When we remove a popcorn ceiling, the surface goes through scraping, skim coating, sanding, priming and painting. Running wiring and cutting fixture openings fits naturally into that sequence, before the finishing work is done.
Do it later, and the sequence runs backwards. Someone cuts holes into a finished, painted ceiling. Then the openings need patching, and the patched areas need repainting — often the whole ceiling, because fresh paint rarely blends invisibly with paint that's been up for a year.
What you avoid by combining the two:

The $200 charge applies in one specific situation: your ceiling has no existing light fixture to draw power from, so we need to run new wiring, or you need a separate switch added for the pot lights. Many older Toronto homes — especially those built before the 1990s, the same ones that tend to have popcorn ceilings — fall into this category. It's a one-time cost for the room, not per fixture.
If you already have a ceiling fixture and just want the lighting on a dimmer, add $50 for the dimmer switch.
